Where to stay in Umdloti

Most places to stay in Umdloti are self-catering holiday apartments and homes, many right on the beach. Here’s how the village breaks down.

South Beach

The southern end of the village is lined with beachfront apartment blocks such as Umdloti Cabanas and the Umdloti Beach Resort. You step straight onto the sand, the tidal pool is a short walk away and many units have sea views from every room.

It is the best choice for families and for anyone who wants to fall asleep to the sound of the sea.

The village and main beach

Around the main beach and tidal pool you’re within walking distance of the restaurants, cafes and surf shop. Expect more people and a livelier feel in season, and good access to everything without the car.

North Beach and the river mouth

Towards the Mdloti River the beach is quieter, with holiday homes and apartments set back from the sand. Good for walkers, birders and fishermen.

La Mercy and Umhlanga

La Mercy, just north, has more holiday homes and a long quiet beach. If you want hotels, Umhlanga Rocks is ten minutes south.

Tips for booking

December holidays and Easter book out months ahead, so book early. Check whether a unit has its own parking and a sea view, how many it sleeps and whether linen and towels are included. Short-stay self-catering is the norm, so look for a full kitchen and a braai.
